Why Are We All So Worried or the Dark Before the Dawn.
What we are now experiencing is the profound disappointment with how our nation is governed. Both Palin's supporters and detractors want to see a new dynamic. However, I don't see a new dynamic happening until corporatism (government for and by the corporations) is identified as the culprit. Both Palin and Obama represent new faces of corporatism but neither represent a fundamental new direction. Obama gets criticized for trying to operate within the constraints of the current system and Palin gets to critique his efforts without having to say much about what she would do within these same constraints. Just as Obama ignited lots of hope for change, Palin ignites lots of hope as well. What is interesting, is neither Obama or Palin had to demonstrate their ability to change things before their meteoric rises to the national stage. Unfortunately the state of the country looks more to appearances than substance. However, the next few years will be a real eye-opening for the voters.
We want answers from our political leaders but increasingly, we see that these politicians are part of a system that can't change the system. With the influence of corporate money and special interests, Washington can't seem to tackle the complex issues facing us with a look to our long-run best interests. Short-term interests and partisan political gain is all that is strived for.
I think part of Sarah's appeal is her confident appearance that she can tackle governing with a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye (wasn't this a large part of Reagan's charm?). How many grim politicians do we need to hear mouthing the same old hypocrisies before we start looking for a fresh face. Obama is and looks very much like a serious guy. But I guess we all look for different things in our leaders. Aren't Obama & Palin the quintessential yin & yang?
